Wuse Market Fire Incident Circulated as Razing of Community in Delta State

On Monday,18th March, an X (formerly Twitter) user ‘Osa Maxi TV with the handle ‘@magxi500’ posted a video of some buildings on fire and claimed that it was from an attack by personnel of the Nigerian Army on the people of Delta community.

Attached to the video is a text that reads, “Nigerian Army committing Genocide in Delta State.” This comes on the heels of reports that 17 soldiers were killed in a Delta community which triggered the burning of houses in the community.

On Thursday 14th March, 17 soldiers of the Nigerian Army were killed in Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. Media reports
said the soldiers were killed in an ambush while on a peacekeeping mission to douse clashes between two communities of Okuama and Okoloba in Delta State.

The news has since provoked public outrage, with citizens calling for justice for the murdered soldiers. Also, there have been reports that the military is engaging in reprisal attacks, leading to the razing of the community. And, some Nigerians are also calling for justice for the innocent citizens supposedly killed in the reprisal attacks.

In the 19-second video posted by Osa Maxi TV, some buildings could be seen on fire, with some people standing by and commenting. A woman could be seen in the video recording the scenario. In the video, the woman’s voice could be heard saying, “ Please pray…please pray that this fire will not reach my shop… Wuse market is burning…please pray. Oh my God”.

The post has attracted over 40,000 views, 237 likes, and 252 reposts.

The video is from the razing of the Delta community by the Nigerian Army.

Rating Justification

Although media reports between 18th-19th of March 2024 say that the community where soldiers were killed in Delta state was razed, there is no official confirmation to indicate that soldiers were responsible for the burning of the Okuama community. President Tinubu has ordered an investigation into the incident where culprits would be brought to book.

However, iVerify Nigeria subjected the video to verification and discovered that it was from the fire incident which occurred at Wuse market in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.

Available media reports say that a section of the Abuja market was set on fire on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, by an angry mob and aggrieved traders after an officer allegedly shot a man who had been charged and convicted.

The video posted by X user Osi Maxi TV is from the fire incident in Wuse market, not the fire-razing incident in the Delta community. Therefore the claim is misleading.
