No! Video of Armed Men Ordering Students to Strip Naked Is Not from Nigeria

Social media users have been circulating a video that suggests that in Nigeria, armed men held some students hostage and ordered them to strip naked.

On March 23, 2024, an X user with the username ‘Barry Avotu Johnson’ posted the video with a caption that reads: “See a country that has police and army! Kidnapped school children in the hands of kidnappers and forced to go naked – boys and girls. This is insanity! Do we have a Government in Nigeria? This is wrong oh”
Another X user @X Daily on the 23rd of March also posted the footage with a text that reads: “See a country that has police and army! Kidnapped school children in the hands of kidnappers and forced to go naked – boys and girls. This is insanity!”

In the 1 minute 31 seconds video, sporadic gunshots can be heard, with the armed men giving orders to the students to remove every piece of clothing on them and raise their hands, with threats of killing anyone who does not obey the order.

The students, who are both girls and boys, can be seen begging for mercy while also removing their uniforms.

Curiously, on Thursday 7th March 2024, over 200 students of L.E.A primary school in Kuriga, a town in Chikun local government area of Kaduna state, were abducted by terrorists, and readers’ minds raced to imagine these could be the abducted students.

This has initiated conversations on social media, having gathered over 480,000 views, over 1300 likes, and more than 500 reposts.

Claim

No! Video of Armed Men Ordering Students to Strip Naked Not from Nigeria

Rating Justification

iVerify Nigeria checked this claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

The video was divided into keyframes using the inVID-a video verification tool and then subjected the keyframes to verification using Google Reverse Image Search.
The result of this search shows that this video was on the internet a few years ago and it was from an incident that occurred in Cameroon.

A Facebook user ‘A,K,A Clovis’ posted the video on the 13th of January 2022 with a text that says, “These are ambazonia terrorists targeting school children in Cameroon, 12 Jan 2022. They are worse than Boko Haram. They took up guns to fight against the education of Anglophones.
The sad thing is that some will look at this atrocity and try to blame Paul Biya.
Anyways, Anglophones created this monster, they deserve the torment.”

Further search shows that on the 14th of January 2022, the same video was posted on Nairaland with a caption that says, “Some students were being attacked in the South West region of Cameroon by the Ambazonia rebel boys for going to school. In the videos that were being shared by an online user, the rebels were seen harassing the students asking them to remove their school uniform and undies thereby leaving them completely naked. They are shot sporadically in the air to scare the students and threatened (sic) to kill them if any of them should run away. Please pray for Cameroon”

Additionally, iVerify Nigeria conducted an internet keyword search to verify the circumstances surrounding the video. Our findings revealed that it was reportedly during an anglophone separatist fight in the western region of Cameroon to break away from the majority French-speaking country.

According to media reports, armed separatists attacked and molested students of Government High School, Buea in Bwitingi-Buea located in the Southwest region of Cameroon on January 12, 2022.

CONCLUSION
Claim that the video of students being ordered to go completely naked is from Nigeria is misleading as checks show that it is from an incident that happened in Cameroon in the year 2022.
