Old Protest Video Recirculates as Recent Hardship Protest in Ibadan, Oyo State

A video surfaced on social media to depict protests against economic hardship in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, which were held on the 19th of February. In the one-minute twenty-second video, a middle-aged woman can be seen holding a microphone and leading abusive songs.

Her chants in the Yoruba language are translated thus: ‘Tinubu, the thief, see the face of a thief, electricity money, education money, the thief has packed it all’, the protesters match on the road, with a ‘pickup’ van in the background which had attached to it, a flag with the inscription
The video was retrieved from a post made by a social media user with the username ‘Emeka Gift Official’ with the caption, ‘Tinubu’s kinsmen are protesting, calling him ole (thief). They said they were hungry and wanted him to resign.
The same video was posted on Instagram on the 20th of February by GossipMillNaija, a Nigerian blog, with the caption, ‘Just In: Wahala be Like Bicycle!!! “President Tinubu should resign with immediate effect” – Tinubu’s Kinsmen and Women Decree as they stage a protest!!! 🚴🏿‍♀️🚴🏿‍♀️🚴🏿‍♀️’ The video has so far attracted over 60,000 likes and over 10,000 comments.
This claim came after a protest against economic hardship broke out in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo state on Monday 19th February when youths and traders took to the streets of Ibadan to show their displeasure at the economic situation of the country.
The protesters moved from Bodija to the Oyo State Secretariat complex, Agodi, displaying placards with inscriptions such as ‘End food hike and inflation,’ ‘Open Land borders’, ‘The poor are starving,’ ‘Tinubu, don’t forget your promises,’ ‘Tinubu, stop this bad governance’, ‘Tinubu, put an end to this hardship’, among others, Premium Times reported.

The video is from the protest against hardship held in Ibadan, Oyo state on the 19th of February, 2024.

Rating Justification

iVerify Nigeria checked this claim and found it to be MISLEADING.
A Keyword internet search was conducted and this led us to many media reports that date as far back as July 2023.
According to the media reports, a protest organised by the labour unions of the country, Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress was held in August 2023.
In Oyo state, the NLC and TUC commenced a protest on Monday, 31st July 2023 to demand palliatives, upward review of pension allowances, and payment of salary deduction, amongst others, from the state government. A protest which lasted for three days.
The video in circulation was from this protest but of a different category of workers who converged at the main gate of the University of Ibadan (UI) who then later moved to join other protesting workers at the Oyo state government secretariat gate in Agodi, Ibadan.
This was confirmed by the Oyo state Coordinator of the “Take It Back Movement” (TIB), a Human Rights organisation, Emiola Solomon, who was also among the coordinators of the protest.
According to Solomon, the woman who led the protest songs as seen in the video is a street hawker at Bodija market, who has made it her tradition to join every protest against hardship.
The video in circulation claiming that it’s from the recent protest against hardship held on February 19, 2024, in Ibadan is misleading, as checks by iVerify Nigeria show that it was from the Oyo State NLC protest held in July/August 2023.
